Rape: useful tips you need to know to avoid it

Rape cases has been a recurrence in Nigeria in the past few weeks in Nigeria. Especially, the case of Uniben student, a 22 year-old Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, who was allegedly raped to death in a redeemed church parish in Benin has raised serious concern on the case of raping in Nigeria.

While many Nigerian were still disturbed by the Uniben student's case, an 18 years old girlidentified as Bello Barakat was reportedly gang raped in Ibadan. Many people, groups and government have since condemned the development. Several Protests has also been staged since then.  

As a matter of fact, rape is not peculiar to one country, it is a global scourge that must be condemned at all time. Rape is an instance when a person intentionally PENETRATES  another's vagina, anus or mouth with a penis, without the other person's consent. Similar to that is what is called sexual assault. Hence there is what is called assault by penetration and that is when a person penetrates another person's vagina or anus with any part of the body other than a penis, or by using an object, without the person's consent.

What separates sex or a gesture of affection, from sexual assault is a matter of consent. That is, the parties involved agreeing to what's happening by choice and legally, the party must have the freedom and ability to make that choice. therefore, to avoid being accused of rape, you must have the consent of the other party (s)

1. Then to avoid being raped, you must dress decently by always wearing clothes that cover every sensitive part of your body because a sensitive part of your body seen today can trigger rape tomorrow. This applies to both male and female. Exposing sensitive part of your body, it should be noted, can make opposite sex have sexual arousal, so avoid it.

2. Whether male or female, try to avoid touching sensitive part of your body unnecessarily. The danger of this is that it make you to begin to have sexual arousal and when this happened, the next available person may be the instrument you will use to satisfy such arousal, and when you don’t have the consent of the person, it becomes rape.

3. Closely related to that is constant exposure to pornography. This will obviously make you to have sex desire and the next available person may be at the receiving end, again if you don’t have the consent of the person, it is rape.

4. Again, as a lady, you must be careful of where you go. Avoid places where there are notorious men. If you must go to such places, don’t go alone, don’t even attempt to go to such places at night.

5. There have been several cases of children defilement by adult men, to avoid this, parent should be conscious of whom they live their children with. Parent should also be conscious of where their children go.

It is pertinent to state here that an adult rape victim can defend herself or himself. However, everyone needs to learn how and to what extent. The victim should however be careful before making attempt to defend herself (or himself in some rare cases) so as to avoid severe physical injury which sometimes leads to death.

2020 in Nigeria has been selected as the year with highest recorded case of rape and the annoying part is the rapist are not been punished accordingly.

Many young girls lose their lives as a result of rape and those who manage to survive through it are fatally injured during the process.

This 60 year old man was caught raping an eight year old girl in minna the capital city of Niger state.

It was gathered that the man used to trick the little girls and then force himself on them, after he was caught, the youths in the area where the incident happen mercilessly beat the old man and handed him to the Niger state police command for a proper investigation.

What Are the Warning Signs of A Potential Abusive Relationship?

• Is he/she extremely jealous and controlling, won’t let you be friendly with others, checks up on you, won’t accept breaking up?

• Is he/she virulent or from a virulent family? Does he/she have a history of fighting, lose his/her temper quickly, feel comfortable about mistreating others? Does he/she grab, push, shove or hit you?

• Is he/she controlling by trying to be bossy, giving orders, making all the decisions, very self centered, not taking your opinions seriously?

• Are you scared of disagreements with him/her? Does he/she threaten you? Always throw things around when angry . Use or own weapons?

• Has he/she ever threatened you? Has he/she ever beaten you or use slanderous words against you.

• Has he/she ever degraded you or tried to lower your self worth, such as putting you down in front of friends and telling you that you would be nothing without him or her?

• Does he/she pressure you for sex or is he/she forceful or scary about sex? Does he/she get too serious about the relationship too fast?

• Does he/she abuse alcohol or other drugs and pressure you to take them?

• Has he/she had a history of failed relationships? And blames the other person for all the problems and never accepts blame.

• Does he/she make your family and friends uneasy, uncomfortable and concerned for your safety?

• Does he/she use derogatory and sexist language when talking about you or other women/men?

If your answer is “yes” to any of these statements or questions you could be the victim of relationship/dating abuse. Abuse isn’t just hitting. It is yelling, threatening, name-calling, saying “I’ll kill myself if you leave me,” obsessive phone calling and extreme possessiveness.

A distraught social media user identified as Ndi Kato, has made a very disturbing revelation of how a 40- year-old hawker was raped and killed in Kubasa, Abuja.

She wrote;

“Yesterday, 40- year-old Habiba Mohammed, went to sell her Kindirmu and fura de nunu like she always does in Kubasa.

Habiba was lured into an uncompleted building by men claiming to want to buy Kindirmu, they raped and killed her in Kubasa, Abuja.”

A three-year-old girl has demonstrated to her mother how her father put his magic stick into her mouth to play with it when the mother is not at home.

The mother of the little child is a very busy businesswoman who goes to work early morning and returns home late in the night where her father on the other side leaves home late leaving him and the little naive child together with her father alone in the house.

On Yesterday afternoon when she was having a good time with her mother, she started talking about something the woman did not pay much attention to but she realized later the child keeps on repeating this same talk. She was like “mummy come and let’s do it, put it right into my mouth let me do it for you ok I won’t bite you” she said.

The mother was very amazed upon witnessing what the child has demonstrated and said to her so she waited for her husband to come home so that she asked him if it is true. He came home late in the evening and when she questioned him, he said it is never true

Shame as Samburu man is caught defiling her niece

Police in Samburu central police station have probed investigation that will lead to the arrest and a jail term for a man accused of defiling a 15-year-old school girl.

 

It was reported that the 45-year-old suspect who is uncle to the victim used mandazi to attract the pupil before force fully penetrating her before she passed out.

According to the girl she claimed that his uncle who cooks mandazi called her at around 7 in the evening to pick some mandazis from his house for her family before shutting the door behind her and started caressing her private parts.

"He closed the door behind me, turned on music and told me that he wanted to show me something. He warned me against disclosing it to anyone." She said.

She explained that her efforts to call for help proved futile since there was a loud noise coming from the radio that over powered her cry.

"I tried to resist but I was unable, he was more energetic than me". She added.

She said that she was stripped, laid on bed facing up and couldn’t recall what else happened since she returned to her sense and found herself lying in the hospital where she came to learn later that she had been defiled.

"Blood was dripping from my private parts, the doctor told me that I had been defiled." She said.

However, the mother to the victim has called out to police to fasten their investigation and ensure the victim has been brought to book.

"We demand for justice; she might be impregnated or even infected." Said mother to the victim.

“I want My Husband Arrested For Tearing My Private Parts” Battered Thika Woman Demands

Battered A 24-year-old mother of two children from Kiang’ombe village in Thika, Kiambu County is seeking justice after her husband allegedly sexually assaulted her after accusing her of infidelity.

Distraught Prisca Ndotu said that they have not been in good terms with 45-year-old Maluke Mwangangi, the husband for three months and she had fled to another plot for rescue after he allegedly strangled her.

However, the grief-stricken woman said Mwangangi came looking for her on Monday carrying shopping and money and later came back on Tuesday without any form of violence between them ensues.

Trouble started on Wednesday evening when he came and found Ndotu, with the children already having bought super using money she had made after selling chips in the village.

Being an unusual occurrence, the husband started confronting her over where she got the money from prompting a serious fight that resulted in the ugly incident.

Mwangangi, a welder, is said to have unclothed Ndotu and using a sharp knife, he stabbed her on her private parts before squeezing the same weapon to penetrate the inner.

“He started by beating me up brutally before he strangled me. He then took a knife with he used to stab my private parts and later painfully squeezed it inner,” the aggrieved woman said.

Bleeding profusely and left unconscious, Ndotu was rescued by her neighbours who immediately whisked her away for safety before Kimuchu police post officers rushed her to hospital.

Unconscious and unaware of her whereabouts, Ndotu found herself at Thika Level Five Hospital where she spent the night being attended and was discharged the day after.

“I thought I died and left my children but through the help of neighbours am alive again,” she added.

Ndotu who has been in the marriage for seven years now said her husband has another affair with another woman whom she accused of orchestrating her killing to win the husband.

Speaking at the plot where the incident happened, Ndotu said it’s over between her and the husband and now wants him arrested and charged for attempted murder.

The mother of two young children who comes from Kitui County is now forced to put on pampers daily to reduce the rate of bleeding even as she awaits further attention by medics at Thika Level Five Hospital.

According to Faith Syombua, a friend and a former church mate to Ndotu, the two have been having domestic feuds.

She said that the two have been good church goers and how the matter got to battering remains a mystery.

Syombua who is now living with the inconsolable mother and her children called on relevant authorities to intervene and pursue justice for Ndotu.
