How To Help A Friend Who’s A Victim Of Violence

Most people talk to other people about their problems. If a friend tells you he or she is being victimized, here are some suggestions on how you can help.

  • Believe the Person: Please believe the person and take them seriously.
  • Listen to them attentively.
  • Offer them comfort and protection.
  • If you notice a friend is in an abusive relationship, don’t ignore signs of abuse. Talk to your friend. Encourage them to report to agencies that can help.
  •  If they need medical attention, offer to assist them.
  •  Show your concerns. let your friend know you are worried.
  •  Do not judge or rush to hasty conclusions about the victim.
  • Point out your friend’s strengths and abilities — many people in abusive relationships are no longer capable of seeing their own abilities and gifts.
  • Encourage them to confide in someone they trust. Talk to someone with experience or knowledgeable enough to help out. Always Offer to go with them for help, it is an assurance to the VICTIM that you care.
  • Never put yourself in a dangerous situation with the victim’s partner. Don’t be a mediator.
