What To Do If You Have Just Been Sexually Assaulted

THIS CAN HELP

  • Locate a safe place.
  • Be calm and don't panic.
  • Contact someone who can help you: a friend, NGOs, the police, a counseling or rape crisis center — any or all of the above.
  • Make sure you only share with people that sincerely care to avoid stigmatization.
  • If you are reporting to the police, do not shower, drink or eat, douche, brush your teeth, or change your clothes. These activities destroy important physical evidence needed in the event that you decide to prosecute the assailant.
  • Get medical attention at a hospital emergency room right away. Even if you do not want to report this to the police, you may have injuries or have been exposed to diseases of which you are not aware of.
  • You may be transported to the hospital by the police or they can meet you there.
  • Seek professional help from a counselor or a local rape crisis center.
  • Remember: The assault was not your fault.
